In the first place, it is meant to exclude the existence of an ectopic pregnancy, a condition which is very serious and which requires urgent hospitalization. In addition, many anomalies can be detected on ultrasound, which may require further diagnostic testing, such as chorionic biopsy or amniocentesis. A special category is expert ultrasound examination performed from 20-24 weeks of pregnancy.

On ultrasound examination the doctor pays attention to the following:

  • number of babies (this is very important in twin or multiple pregnancies)
  • the position of the baby and the placenta in the womb
  • baby's length measured in millimeters (CRL-crown to rump lenght; length from crown to vertebra)
  • heart shop
  • the weight of the baby
