Anorexia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a common cause of amenorrhea in adolescents and young adults. These patients are very dissatisfied with their own body image, so there is an abnormal preoccupation and a desire to lose weight as much as possible, which translates into an obsession.

Amenorrhea soon joins the weight loss. Failure to correct the patient's nutritional status and emotional attitudes may result in anabolic exhaustion and death. Anorexia nervosa Prevention consists of appropriate social adjustment in childhood, and good relationships with parents. Improved nutrition leads to the repair of metabolic and endocrine disorders. Menstruation is restored when middle weight is reached.

Amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, or anovulatory cycles may persist despite a reasonable improvement in nutrition. Long-term follow-up and repeat treatment as needed are very important. Pregnancy should be avoided until longer patient adjustment is achieved. The prognosis depends on the age of the person at the time of diagnosis, the duration of amenorrhea, the accompanying severe psychiatric problems and the extent of weight loss. Approximately half of patients with anorexia nervosa achieve satisfactory emotional recovery with proper therapy.
